Monkey Gambling Research

bubble gum monkey comicIt is often fascinating to look at what researchers will do and how they will come to conclusions. A number of research projects have been done looking at how monkeys will react when place in gambling situations. The research is done for a number of reasons. Monkeys are seen as being very close to humans in many ways. They have compassion and an ability to think for themselves. The research that is done with the monkeys can very often be translated to research in human behaviour and this can help psychologists, psychiatrists and others to think about gambling addition, treatment plans and even the stock market and the ways that people approach money in this location.

Rochester Monkey “Casino” Experiment

fur furniture cat memeOne such experiment done by Tommy Blanchard at the University of Rochester and his team looked at whether or not monkeys will believe in a blind streak when there isn’t any evidence to show that they are having a streak. The study was done by Benjamin Hayden, Tommy Blanchard, and Andreas Wilke and was written up in an issue of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Learning and Cognition. The monkeys had to select between right and left to try to guess the right answer. There were three types of play that they did and two had clear patterns while the third did not. The three rhesus monkeys quickly understood the sequence in the two situations that had patterns. When they were monkey slots online banneroffered the completely random task, however, they keep expecting a streak or a pattern. They even favoured this choice over others, even though there was no pattern. Extrapolating to online casino games and to people, the research showed that people have a desire to see patterns in their lives even when there aren’t any. And this can have an impact on decision making, as we assume that our decisions are based on research and fact – and sometimes they really aren’t. The researchers were surprised to see that, with weeks of play and on average 1244 trails, the monkeys kept going back to the choice that had no patterns. There are different theories about why we look for patterns. Some of the researchers said that animals do so in order to get food and to find food. Another researcher said that we simply love to see patterns and this is true with the crossword puzzles we do, the Sodoko we do and other such games.

Monkey’s Task

The monkeys were given three tasks, two of which has predictable outcomes and one of which had no set pattern at all. With the ones that had set patterns, the monkeys were able to figure out the patterns quickly and to get rewards. The question was what they would do with the choice that didn’t have a set pattern. With this task, the monkeys consistently made choices that showed that they expected a streak or a pattern at any second. They kept doing this even when they were shown again and again that no pattern was coming. Why did they act in this way?

Why did the monkeys “gamble” this way?

One theory is that animals need these types of patterns when they look for food. If they cat meme of fluffy meow kittyfind bugs under one branch or area, they want to come back to this area and they hope to find food again. Another idea, put forward by researcher Benjamin Hayden, is that ‘We have this incredible drive to see patterns in the world, and we also have this incredible drive to learn. I think it’s very related to why we like music, and why we like to do crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and things like that. If there’s a pattern there, we’re on top of it. And if there may or may not be a pattern there, that’s even more interesting.”
As they relate to online casino playing and gambling, these findings show that we have a desire to see patterns even when they aren’t there and to keep believing in this idea no matter what.

There have been many research projects and experiments conducted on monkeys in a variety of different areas of life. The experiments all take on the same format with some kind of game that is devised for the monkey and his reactions are monitored allowing conclusions to be drawn about the behaviour of the monkey. The conclusions can often be correlated to human behaviour and interactions especially under stressful circumstances where quick decisions have to be made or risks need to be taken. The experiments have been conducted over the years on many different species of monkeys from the primate family and include general observations of behaviour in addition to devising games that incite reactions from the monkeys.  All species of monkeys including apes and chimpanzees show a high level of intelligence and in fact a very caring attitude with emotional reactions to different situations. This can be seen in the way that the different species look after and play with domestic animals, especially cats, protecting them and nurturing them as detailed in this article.

Experiments with Risk Taking Monkeys

The monkey is a very intelligent animal. Researchers believe that the there is a direct correlation between how a monkey reacts in different circumstances to how humans behave. Over the years there have been many experiments conducted to show the irrational and emotional behaviour of the monkey and these results have been used to purport the theory that humans also behave based on instinct and emotion whether buying a house that smells nice even though there is water damage or by the impulsive bets that are made when playing online pokies or another online casino game.  The decisions made by a human are sometimes irrational and there is no real explanation for the decision that is made. Monkeys, together with humans like to take risks but sometimes their risks do not pay off and the gamble is disappointing which can lead to an adverse reaction. The decisions made in gambling are often based on impulse and a “feeling” rather than educated guesses; this corresponds to the monkey’s behavior under controlled experiments.

Experiments Prove that Monkeys Take Risks and Gamble

Yale University academic Alexander Rosalti together with Brian Hare from Duke University conducted experiments on 38 monkeys that had been captured from the Congo. These monkeys were in captivity for a number of years before the experiments were conducted and they were well looked after and comfortable in their environment. The group of monkeys was made up of 15 bonobos and 23 chimpanzees, both considered calm and intelligent animals. Two different experiments were conducted to check the reactions of the monkeys and also see the gambling risks they would take. In the first experiment type the monkeys had the choice of taking a grape immediately or waiting a longer period of time in the hope that the gamble would pay off and they would get more than one grape. The second experiment was very similar where the monkeys were given a known treat i.e. they could see what they were getting or alternatively they could choose the hidden treat, not knowing what was there.  The reaction of one chimpanzee was recorded and can be seen on you tube today as part of the summation article written up in one of the science periodicals.

Gambling Decisions are an Emotional Decision

The conclusions of these experiments conducted by Rosati and her partner from Duke meme of monty cat with quote about magicUniversity were very conclusive surmising that emotions contribute greatly to the decisions made by the primates. This directly correlates to the decisions made by humans when gambling, they like to gather information but the final decision is always based on emotions and evolution has in fact taught humans to take risks. The human mind is complex, just like that of the monkey but even with this complexity the basic instincts of wanting to get more and taking a risk apply. When playing online pokies or other online casino games, just one more bet may bring the big win and hence the need and desire to continue playing casino games within the limitations that are presented. There is in fact a well-known and respected gambling strategy called the Martindale method. Martindale believes that at every loss, the player needs to increase his bet in order that he will win back his full money when he eventually wins. This is very similar to the basic instincts of the monkeys and humans, in that they truly believe in their sub conscious that eventually there will be a win. And just like the monkeys react badly to a loss or bad bet, so do the humans, it is instinctive and a perfectly normal reaction.  Rosati concluded that “ emotional reactions are thought to be important in human economic decisions” and” one of the things that deters people from being too risky is that you feel upset if you gamble and lose”. The conclusions of Rosati apply to everyday life decisions in addition to the world of online gambling where players at some point have to call it quits if they have not made any progress with their bets.

Riskier Choices Preferred Over Safe Bets

Other experiments carried out on the primates include an experiment by Daniel Haun, a psycholinguistics’ specialist from the Max Planek Institute. Haun performed experiments on apes under controlled conditions. The apes where offered pieces of banana that were hidden under upside down cups. The apes were offered a “safe bet”, i.e. they could settle for the smaller piece or they could gamble and hope for gaining a larger piece of banana.  It was noted that the apes gambled on the less safe bet 50% of the time but as more cups where introduced with more chances of mistakes, the apes became more cautious. Haun concluded that the apes are sophisticated animals and like to take risks but as the risks increase they become a little more wary and more careful about their risk taking. More information about this experiment conducted on the apes can be found in a number of UK national newspapers including the Daily Mail report from 2011 .

 Koko the Communicating Gorilla

All of the experiments and studies carried out on the primates come to the same conclusion that these animals have a high intellect and are capable of similar, if not same behavior as humans. One of the most famous primates in American is Koko the gorilla from San Francisco zoo. Koko was taught sign language and through this he was and is able to communicate with humans about almost anything. Penny Patterson undertook the task of teaching and nurturing this incredible primate. Koko learnt to communicate using sign language over a period of just a few months as can be seen in the Koko documentary screened about this unique animal .

Primates React Emotionally to Other Creatures

creepy cat in a suit case memeThrough his sign language Koko asked for a pet cat to keep him company. At first he was given a stuffed toy cat but easily communicated his disappointment and on his birthday that year was brought a litter of kittens and invited to choose one. Koko chosen a lovely fluffy little kitten and even named his first cat “All Ball”. All Ball was the apple of Koko’s eye, Koko was gentle and loving with the cat and played with him daily but unfortunately All Ball ran away one day from his cage and was run over. Koko was devastated and showed real emotion at this news and it took him some time to get over the loss of All Ball. But at a later date Koko was brought a box of kittens and invited to choose one, he could not decide and ended up with two new kittens Lipstick and Smokey. Cats are warm and loving creatures and very loyal. They like to be looked after and loved and petted and in return they also given love and devotion. Cats are known to keep humans calm and in this same way served to keep Koko calm. This is another similarity between the primates and humans, their ability to react in emotional ways to different situations. There are many different video clips of cats and primates living and playing together. For some people, these clips are just fun to watch but for others it is a way to see how similar monkeys are in behavior to humans. There is a clip from 2012 filmed in Laos in which a group of monkeys are seen watching two cats that start play fighting but end up in a full blown real cat fight. One monkey in particular breaks up the fight, followed by other monkeys and then they stay observing the reactions of the cats. This type of behavior in monkeys reflects exactly how humans would behave if they saw a fight, they would observe it for a while but in time they would do their utmost to break it up and track the participants to make sure it did not continue.

Similarities between the Gambling Monkey and the Human Gambler

The similarities between primates and humans are incredible.  Many of us have always known that the monkey is the closest animal in every way to humans and with the proof of all of these experiments, the evidence speaks for itself. One may ask why perform all of these experiments if we know that humans are close to monkeys in behaviour but in fact these experiments and observations help in a number of ways. Firstly it helps to see how evolution has molded humans to behave a certain way, the emotions that a person feels and shows when winning a game of online pokies or losing a different online casino (EXAMPLE) game are natural. These are inbuilt emotions that cannot be controlled. The human mind cannot decide when to be happy or sad or when to cry and when to laugh, it is an inbuilt reaction in some ways cannot be totally controlled but it can be curbed. This information is also used for online casinos in attracting players to the different games. The online casino brings in players using emotional triggers that will instigate the want to win in a person, just like the ape that wanted more bananas. And the online casino plays on this emotion by introducing more risks and more excitement to the game. Apart from the risk taking, the monkey also likes to nurture and look after things that it loves. The monkey takes great care of its pets, as proved by Koko the gorilla and a number of other clips that show monkeys caring for cats and kittens. The nurturing side of the monkey shows a very human aspect where the monkey likes to look after others and develop a relationship with the other party. In conclusion it can definitely be stated that monkeys not only know how to gamble but they like to take risks and believe that eventually it will pay off while still keeping their warm and loving and caring side to them as they nurture and take care of their own special pets.
